Alternatives to security deposits
Suppliers routinely accept payment plansas acceptable alternatives to cash security deposits.1Reg 6(1) (a) and (b) EG(SP)S) Regs
Some electricity suppliers accept guarantors as an alternative to a security deposit. Potential guarantors should be aware that if the bill is not paid, they are liable for the debt and could be pursued for the debt through the courts.
Suppliers are not entitled to a security deposit if you are prepared to have a prepayment meter and it is reasonably practical for the supplier to provide one. Suppliers can take into consideration the risk of loss or damage to a meter in deciding whether a prepayment meter can be offered. You may be asked to pay a security deposit and have a prepayment meter if this is reasonable as a result of your conduct – eg, if there is evidence that you may damage the meter.
