10. Non-dependant deductions
In calculating
the housing costs amount, a deduction of £96.55 is made for each non-dependant (see below) living in your home. The deduction is referred to in law as a
‘housing cost contribution’
. It is assumed that the non-dependant will contribute towards your housing costs, whether they do or not. However, there are circumstances when no deduction can be made (see below).
Deductions for non-dependants are made only after all the other steps in the calculation of your housing costs amount have been made. If the deduction is greater than your housing costs amount, as calculated so far, the result is set at nil.

Who is a non-dependant?
A
‘non-dependant’
is someone who normally lives in your home on a non-commercial basis – usually an adult son, daughter, friend or relative. The following people do not count as your non-dependants:
