9. The size criteria
In calculating your housing costs amount, the DWP will take into account the type of accommodation the law considers it reasonable for you to live in: the ‘size criteria’. The size criteria focuses on the number of bedrooms your household is deemed to need, taking into account the number of people in your household, their ages, disabilities and genders.

Your household – The following people make up your household:
    ■you and your partner, if you have one;
    ■any child or qualifying young person (see Chapter 15(4) ) you or your partner are responsible for; and
    ■anyone who is a ‘non-dependant’ (see 10 below ).

How many bedrooms are you allowed?
You are allowed one bedroom for each of the following people in your household:
    ■you (and your partner, unless it is inappropriate for you to share a room because of disability – see below);
    ■a qualifying young person you or your partner are responsible for;
    ■a non-dependant aged 16 or o
