Challenges when working with vulnerable clients
Vulnerable clients may have additional needs that limit their ability to make decisions and choices, or to represent their own interests. This can leave them at greater risk of harm if things go wrong.
Engagement may be an issue due to a client’s lack of motivation or because they struggle with their mental health. Advisers should check in with clients during an interview to ensure they are engaged, work to build rapport with active listening skills and reflect back to encourage engagement.
Clients’ conditions may fluctuate and change, requiring advisers to be flexible in their approach. It is useful for advisers to try to identify the help and support the client may need. For clients with multiple needs, a referral or multiple agency working may be necessary.
Clear communication can help break down barriers and help the client to share personal information.
