Dealing with a client in crisis
It can be very upsetting if a client is distressed and considering self-harm or has suicidal feelings. It is normal for an adviser to feel shocked, worried or upset in this situation. Remember to listen, be supportive and try not to judge the client. See the advice on here for help with dealing with clients with suicidal feelings.
Use the following pointers when talking with a client in crisis.
Be honest. Tell the person why you are worried for them.
Ask questions. Be direct, but in a caring, supportive way.
Do not panic. It won’t help the person if you panic. Stay calm and supportive.
Listen and empathise. Use active listening techniques. Try to see their point of view.
Hearing about suicide can be tough. It is vital to look after your own physical and mental wellbeing. Talk to people you trust about how you feel, to avoid feeling overwhelmed and be able to stay focused on supporting your client.
