Legal funding
Before April 2013, Community Legal Service funding was available for taking court action if you had a strong enough case and qualified on financial grounds. However, there are now major restrictions on these cases and realistically legal aid is only likely if a consumer matter also involves a matter of serious personal injury or a threat to loss of home or a discrimination issue. Check gov.uk/legal-aid/eligibility to see if you are likely to qualify.
In Scotland, the Scottish Legal Aid Board provides civil assistance. Eligibility is based upon disposable income after essential expenses have been paid. For more details, see slab.org.uk.
In practice, it may be very hard to find a solicitor or advice and assistance funded by legal aid in many areas. It may also take time for an application for legal aid assistance to be processed.
