1. Introduction
It is always worth checking whether you are legally responsible for a bill, particularly when you are in dispute with a gas or electricity supplier about arrears. It may be that you are not liable for all, or some, of the bill – perhaps because the bill was in the name of a partner who has left, a flat-sharer, a previous occupant, your landlord or someone who has died. Suppliers may attempt to recover these sums from you – but they are not always entitled to do so.
