22. Introduction
Your capital
can affect your entitlement to housing benefit when it is above certain set limits (see 23 below). Capital includes savings, investments, some lump-sum payments and the value of property and land (but if you own the home you live in, the value of your home, garden, garage and outbuildings is disregarded). Certain types of capital can be disregarded (see 26 to 32 below). Sometimes capital can be treated as income (see 18 above) and vice versa (see
34 below ). In some cases, you can be treated as possessing capital that you don’t actually have (see
35 below ).
