1. Introduction
Your universal credit award may include a ‘housing costs amount’ to cover rent and some service charges. A housing costs amount can only be included in your award when your home is residential accommodation in Great Britain. It does not matter whether the accommodation consists of the whole or part of a building and whether or not it is made up of separate and self-contained premises.
There are two types of payment:
The housing costs amount cannot be paid to anyone who is aged 16 or 17 years and has left local authority care.
