Who can get a student loan

Eligibility for a student loan depends on the applicant’s course and college or university. Usually, they must be under 61 on the first day of the course. How much is paid is partly based on the student’s household income.

Students must also meet the residency conditions (see here).

If an applicant is studying to be a paramedic, nurse or midwife at a Scottish university, they get a bursary to cover their expenses instead of a loan (see here). See here if the student was previously ’looked after’ by a local authority.
