Sole liability
Debts solely in the name of the person who died either need to be written off if the person did not have any assets or be repaid through the deceased’s estate. The deceased’s partner does not normally become responsible for the debt.
Therefore, checking liability for every debt is important as creditors may attempt to claim the debt from a spouse or partner.
