Smart Export Guarantee
On 1 April 2020, the government introduced a replacement for FITs. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires some electricity suppliers (SEG licensees) to pay small-scale generators (SEG generators) for low-carbon electricity which they export back to the National Grid, providing certain criteria are met.
If you have one of the following measures, you could benefit from the SEG (provided you meet the rest of the eligibility criteria) up to a capacity of 5MW, or up to 50kW for micro-CHP:
    solar PV;
    wind;
    micro-CHP;
    hydro;
    anaerobic digestion (AD).
The rate at which you are paid, the contract length and other terms are determined by the SEG licensee. If you are thinking of applying for a SEG tariff, you should shop around to see which tariff is best for your circumstances.
You are paid by your licensee for the electricity you export back to the National Grid. SEG tariff rates must always be above zero. SEG payments are calculated by using export meter readings.
