5. Employment and support allowance

5. Employment and support allowance
If you are
entitled immediately before you leave, you can continue
to be entitled to employment and support allowance (ESA) during a temporary absence from GB for:
■
the first four weeks, if the absence is unlikely to exceed 52 weeks;
or
■
the first 26 weeks, if the absence is unlikely to exceed 52 weeks and is solely in connection with arrangements made for treatment outside GB, by, or under the supervision of, a person appropriately qualified, for:
-
your disease or disablement, which is directly related to your limited capability for work and which began before you left GB;
or
-
the disease or disablement of a dependent child who you are accompanying;
or
■
the first 26 weeks, if you were in a country when the UK government advised British nationals to leave, or arranged for their evacuation from, that country, you had not entered that country when the advice was to leave, and it would be unreasonable to expect you to return, or have returned, to GB.
