8. How do you claim?
On the first day you become unemployed, you should claim JSA. Do not delay, otherwise you will lose benefit unless you can show there are administrative or ‘special reasons’ for the delay (see below ). Most contact during your claim will be with a ‘work coach’ at the local office where you sign on.
Waiting days
The first seven days of your claim are ‘waiting days’, during which you cannot usually be paid JSA. You do not have to serve waiting days if:
    ■your claim is linked to a previous ‘jobseeking period’ (see 5 above );
    ■a decision maker moves you onto JSA from employment and support allowance (ESA); or
    ■you claim within 12 weeks of being entitled to ESA, carer’s allowance or carer support payment.
