Box B.5: Re-assessment of existing DLA claimants
Personal independence payment (PIP) is gradually being introduced for existing disability living allowance (DLA) claimants.
When will you be re-assessed?
If any of the three circumstances listed below apply to you, you will be invited to claim PIP. You will not have the choice to stay on DLA.
    ■Your fixed-period award of DLA is ending.
    ■The DWP receives information about a change in your care or mobility needs (including where you inform them of such a change).
    ■You reach the age of 16 (see below).
Random transfer – Other existing claimants in England, Northern Ireland and Wales are also being invited to claim PIP, chosen at random by the DWP; this process is currently paused and is due to restart in September 2026.
Who will not be re-assessed?
Aged 65 or over – If you get DLA and on 8.4.13 (or 20.6.16 in Northern Ireland) you were aged 65 or over, you will not be re-assessed for PIP and cannot choose to claim it. Your DLA continues and can be
