18. Older children
As children develop, both physically and mentally, there may be a reduction in their care needs; on the other hand, some care needs may increase.
For example, a child with a physical disability may get better at using aids to move independently. Increasing maturity may mean children with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, can take responsibility for the care of their condition (and so need less supervision). Specialist education may help to reduce the needs of children with sensory impairments.
On the other hand, physical development may increase care or supervision needs. A child with a learning disability may need more supervision as they get older and become more mobile. Adolescents with disabilities may have to cope with their care or mobility needs while undergoing rapid changes to their bodies. This may exacerbate the non-conforming or rebellious behaviour common among this age group.
