An earnings arrestment was introduced by the Debtors (Scotland) Act 1987. It is the second most common form of diligence used in Scotland to recover debts, with 57,260 being served in 2022/23.

There are three types of arrestment:

•earnings arrestment;
•current maintenance arrestment;
•conjoined arrestment order.
