The level of an award is based on a tariff that lists the injuries for which compensation may be paid. The 15 tariff levels are graduated according to the seriousness of the condition.

Lump-sum payments – A lump sum may be paid for pain and suffering, paid according to which of the 15 tariff levels applies to you. It can be awarded while you are still in service.

Guaranteed income payment – A ‘guaranteed income payment’ (GIP), to compensate for loss of earnings, is payable each month for life to those whose injuries are assessed at tariff levels 1-11. It is calculated by multiplying your basic salary (excluding allowances) by a figure determined by your age on leaving service or on the date of claim, if later. A younger claimant’s pay would be multiplied by a higher figure, as they would have had longer until their retirement and their potential loss of earnings is therefore greater.
