The charge will be determined by your local authority, subject to an assessment of your needs and means to pay. Guidance on charging for non-personal non-residential care services provides minimum charging thresholds, which are uprated annually: the rates for 2026/27 are £176 a week for a single person (£268 for a couple) for those under pension age, and £298 a week for a single person (£455 for a couple) for those over pension age.

You are not charged for personal care. If you live at home, the amount of personal care you will receive is determined by a local authority assessment, with no limit set on the amount authorities can provide. Limits apply if you live in a care home (see Box I.4 ). Free personal care services may be arranged by the authority, or you can ask for a direct payme
