Only your own income and capital is taken into account in the financial assessment, as the local authority has no power to assess couples according to their joint resources. This means a local authority cannot normally approach your partner for any contribution towards the cost of care and support. However, an exception applies if you have gone into a care home temporarily and your partner is still being paid benefit for both of you as a couple; see 9 below .
