2. Who can get housing benefit?

2. Who can get housing benefit?
You can get housing benefit if you meet all the following conditions:
■
you are not excluded from getting housing benefit (see
below
and
Box F.7
);
■
you are liable to pay rent on your normal home (see
5 below
);
■
with the exception of some people who have reached pension age, you do not have capital of more than £16,000 (see
22 below
);
■
you are on the guarantee credit of pension credit or your income is below a certain level (see
20
and
22 below
);
and
■
you claim and provide the information requested (see
13 below
).

Mixed-age couples
New claims
– If you are one of
a couple and only one of you has reached pension age (see
Chapter 42(2)
), a
‘mixed-age couple
’, you cannot normally make a new claim for housing benefit. Unless you live in ‘specified’ or ‘temporary’ accommodation (see
1 above
), you must normally claim universal credit instead until the younger partner has also reached pension age, at which point you can claim housing bene
