If you are an owner-occupier and liable to make eligible service charge payments (see 5 above ), these may be met by the housing costs amount. The housing costs amount cannot cover the interest on mortgages and home improvement loans; these costs may be met by repayable ‘support for mortgage interest’ loans instead ( see Chapter 24 for details).

To work out how much the housing costs amount can cover, each of the service charge payments that are due that month are added up. If the payments are not made on a monthly basis, a monthly equivalent is calculated (see 8 above ).
