To be entitled to universal credit, employment and support allowance (ESA) or jobseeker’s allowance (JSA), you need to have accepted a ‘claimant commitment’. If you are claiming universal credit jointly with your partner (see Chapter 14(3) ), you both need to have accepted a commitment.

What is a claimant commitment? – The claimant commitment is a record of the conditions that you must meet to continue receiving the benefit in full.

The DWP decides the way in which you can accept the commitment – eg online, by phone or in writing.
