If you move permanently to Scotland, you can continue to receive carer’s allowance for a run-on period of up to 13 weeks and six days following the move (if the person you care for dies before the move or during the 13-week run-on period following the move, the 8-week run-on period that follows their death – see 2 above – will apply instead). Apply for carer support as soon as possible after moving, to avoid a gap between payments.

If you claim carer support within 26 weeks of the move, the award will be backdated to the week in which the carer’s allowance stopped (or to 15.3.26, if that is later); this award will include any arrears of Scottish carer supplement or carer additional person payment that you may be entitled to. Social Security Scotland can backdate awards made outside the 26-week deadline if they accept that you had a good reason for claiming late.
