4. Alternative housing
Many people prefer to move to a property designed to be accessible for a disabled person rather than undertaking major adaptations to their current home. However, even an accessible property may need some adaptations to suit your particular needs.
If you are seeking social housing (ie council or housing association properties), contact your local authority and make sure you are put on the housing register. It is important to stress your housing requirements. Most housing association properties are allocated via local authorities but some associations operate their own waiting lists, particularly for wheelchair users, so it is worthwhile contacting housing associations directly.
