9. The points-based system
Since 2 December 2020, the Home Office has been operating a points-based system for people who wish to work or study in the UK. These categories of leave are all subject to a ‘no recourse to public funds’ condition. The categories of leave are:
•student visa;
•skilled worker route;
•global talent route;
•graduate route;
•intra-company transfer;
•high potential individual visa;
•global business mobility visa;
•other:
◦start-up and innovators;
◦health and care visa;
◦creative route;
◦international sportsperson;
◦seasonal workers;
◦Youth Mobility Scheme.
These types of leave all have different conditions. Your Home Office grant letter should have a full explanation of whether you can apply to vary or extend your leave.
