This chapter covers the rules that apply to people who reach pension age on or after 6 April 2016 and who are eligible for the new state retirement pension, known as ‘state pension’. People who reached pension age before 6 April 2016, including those who had already claimed their state retirement pension and those who had deferred claiming it, continue on the previous retirement pension scheme. In this chapter, these pensions are referred to as ‘old’ retirement pensions. For more details about these, see the 2015/16 edition of this Handbook.
