Key facts
•To qualify for jobseeker’s allowance (JSA), you must usually satisfy jobseeking conditions – ie, you must be available for work, actively seek work and have a current claimant commitment.
•If your entitlement to JSA ends because you were found not to be available for or to actively seek work, you can be given a sanction when you make a new claim for JSA and your JSA may be paid at a reduced (or nil) rate.
•There are a number of things you must do after you have been awarded JSA. These include ‘signing on’, and attending and participating in regular interviews.
•If you disagree with a decision on whether you are available for or actively seeking work, or about your claimant commitment, you can apply for a revision or a supersession (see Chapter
56), or appeal against it (see Chapter
57). You must apply for a mandatory reconsideration before you can appeal.
