Key facts
    •Universal credit (UC) has now been introduced nationwide for most new claimants.
    •When you come under the UC system, UC replaces most other means-tested benefits and tax credits.
    •Current claimants of means-tested benefits and tax credits do not automatically come under the UC system, but can transfer to UC – eg, by claiming UC after a change of circumstances, or under the government’s official programme.
    •Under the official transfer process due to start in 2020, existing awards of means-tested benefits and tax credits will be brought to an end and claimants will be invited to claim UC instead. This process will be tested on a few cases from July 2019.
