Box N.6: Backdating supersessions
A revised decision takes effect from the date the original decision took effect, so benefit is fully backdated.
A superseded decision generally takes effect from the date you apply for the decision to be superseded, so benefit can only be backdated to this date. Exceptions to the rule are listed below.

Following a reinterpretation of the law in a test case
the date of the test case decision
Change of circumstances
■notified within 1 month
the date of change
■for universal credit – notified during a monthly assessment period (see Chapter 15(1) )
the start of the assessment period
■for disability living allowance, personal independence payment or attendance allowance – notified within 1 month of completing 3- or 6-month qualifying period for new rate or component
the end of the qualifying period
■notified after
