Stays in hospital (or a similar institution – see below) as an inpatient can affect benefits. Disability living allowance (DLA), Scottish adult DLA, personal independence payment (PIP), adult disability payment (ADP), attendance allowance, pension age disability payment (PADP), carer’s allowance, carer support payment and child benefit can be stopped after just a few weeks in hospital (see 4 below ). In turn, this can affect your entitlement to housing benefit and pension credit (see 3 below and Box N.3 ). Universal credit can be affected by the stopping of carer’s allowance or carer support payment (see 3 below ). Consequently, you must let the DWP know if you or a dependant are admitted to hospital. If you get carer’s allowance, you must tell the DWP if the person you are caring for is admitted; if you get carer support payment, you must tell Social Security Scotland if the person you are caring for is admitted.
