1. Do you qualify?
You can get
child benefit if you are responsible for a child or qualifying young person, you are not subject to immigration control (see
Chapter 51(2)
) and you pass the residence and presence tests (see
Chapter 51(3)
). You are responsible for a child/young person if they are living with you or you contribute to the cost of supporting them. There is no lower age limit for the child. There is no limit to the number of children you can claim for. Child benefit is run by HMRC.
Child
– This is a child under the age of 16.
Qualifying young person
– This is a young person under the age of 20 who is in full-time, non-advanced education
or approved, unwaged training (which must not be provided under a contract of employment). Nineteen-year-olds can only be included if they started such education or training before their 19th birthday (or were accepted or enrolled to undertake it).
