Disability living allowance (DLA) provides help towards the extra costs of bringing up a disabled child. See Chapter 3 for details. You can be awarded the care component of DLA for your baby from when they are 3 months old; claim any time beforehand. See Chapter 3(14) . If your baby is not expected to live more than 12 months, they qualify automatically for the highest rate care component and payment can begin as soon as you claim DLA after the birth.

In Scotland, ‘child disability payment’ (CDP) has replaced DLA (see Chapter 6 ).
