You cannot get the universal credit housing costs amount or, in most cases, housing benefit to cover the costs of a registered care home (see below for help with meeting the costs of your own home). For universal credit housing costs amount purposes, ‘care home’ is defined as accommodation provided in a care home or an independent hospital. For housing benefit purposes, ‘residential accommodation’ is defined in the same way. Care homes, including local authority care homes, are required to be registered with the appropriate body (see Chapter 34(6) ).

Some care homes have de-registered and become ‘Supported Living’ accommodation. In this situation, you will usually be able to claim housing benefit if the accommodation can be counted as an ‘exempt tenancy’ (see Chapter 21(9) ) and you receive care, support or supervision.
