1. Introduction
You may be
able to get help to cover the interest payments on your mortgage or eligible home improvement loans if you are entitled to a
‘qualifying benefit’
: universal credit or pension credit
.
This help will come in the form of loan payments from the DWP:
‘support for mortgage interest’
(SMI) loans. These must be repaid with interest once your property has been sold. The SMI loans may be secured by a charge on your property (see
3 below
). You do not need to accept an offer of these loans; the scheme is voluntary.
In this chapter, we explain SMI loans as they apply if you are claiming universal credit; if you are claiming pension credit, see
Disability Rights Handbook
48th edition, Chapter 28.
LMIR Regs
When can an offer of SMI loans be made to you?
– The DWP may offer you SMI loans to cover any eligible interest on
‘owner-occupier payments’
that you are liable to make on the accommodation that you occupy as your home (see
2 below
).
