7. Carer amount
A ‘carer amount’ of £209.34 a month is included in your award if you have ‘regular and substantial caring responsibilities’ for a severely disabled person. You are considered to have such responsibilities if you:
    ■meet the qualifying conditions for carer’s allowance (see Chapter 8(2) ) or would do so but for the fact that your earnings are too high; or
    ■are entitled to carer support payment (see Chapter 8(6) ).
You do not need to have made a claim for carer’s allowance to have the amount included. You are not entitled to a carer amount if you receive any earnings for your caring responsibilities.
If you and someone else both care for the same person, only one of you can qualify for a carer amount; you can jointly decide which of you it will apply to.
If you are claiming universal credit jointly (see Chapter 14(3) ), and both you and your partner have caring responsibilities but for different people, two carer amounts can be included in your award.
