Universal credit – If you have caring responsibilities and a limited capability for work-related activity, a ‘carer amount’ cannot be included in your universal credit award at the same time as a ‘limited capability for work-related activity amount’ (see Chapter 15(7) ).

Employment and support allowance – If you have a limited capability for work due to disability or ill health and are under pension age, you may be able to claim employment and support allowance (ESA – see Chapter 11 ). Payment of carer’s allowance or carer support payment usually stops when you get ESA because these benefits overlap, but you keep an underlying entitlement.
