12. How do earnings affect carers’ benefits?
You cannot get carer’s allowance
or carer support payment (CSP) if your net earnings are more than £204 a week – the
‘earnings limit’
. See below for the way in which earnings are calculated.
ICA Regs, reg 8
;
CSP Regs, reg 14
Earnings of £204 a week or less do not affect carer’s allowance or CSP, but any universal credit or pension credit you also receive may be reduced (see Chapters
16(1)
-(7) and
41(6)
).
Calculating earnings
In working out how much of your earnings are taken into account, certain deductions and disregards can be made from gross earnings. Count any payment from your employer as earnings (eg bonuses, commissions and retainers).
If you stop work and then claim carer’s allowance or CSP, most payments made at the end of your job are disregarded, eg pay in lieu of notice and holiday pay.
If you are self-employed, the rules on working out net profit follow the rules for housing benefit (see
Chapter 23(5)
).
