NHS wheelchairs
The NHS can supply and maintain wheelchairs free of charge in some circumstances. Ask your GP, physiotherapist or hospital staff to refer you to your local wheelchair service for an assessment.
Personal wheelchair budgets – In England, ‘personal wheelchair budgets’ (PWBs) have been introduced. These are similar to care and support ‘personal budgets’ (see Chapter 34(4) ). To arrange a PWB, your wheelchair service will:
    ■carry out an assessment to find out what health and wellbeing outcomes you wish to achieve;
    ■develop a personal support plan with you;
    ■offer you a PWB; this is an amount of money for a wheelchair to meet your assessed needs; and
    ■advise you on your options and help you in deciding how you want to use your PWB.
