14. How do you claim?
Starting your claim
You can start your PIP claim by ringing 0800 917 2222 (Relay UK 18001 then 0800 917 2222), or in Northern Ireland 0800 012 1573 (textphone 0800 587 0937). If you are deaf and use British Sign Language, you may be able to claim using a video relay service (for details, see: www.gov.uk/pip/how-to-claim or, in Northern Ireland, www.nidirect.gov.uk/contacts/personal-independence-payment-centre-northern-ireland ). You can claim online in some areas (to check for your area, see www.gov.uk/pip/how-to-claim ).
Someone else can make the call on your behalf (eg a support worker), but you need to be with them when they do so. During this call, which should last about 15 minutes, basic details will be obtained from you, including:
    ■your personal and contact details and national insurance number;
    ■information about your nationality (see Chapter 51(2) ) and whether you have been abroad for more than four weeks at a time over the last three years (see Chapter
