Key facts
•Universal credit (UC) has been introduced for new claims from people who need means-tested benefit support because they have a low income.
•When you come under the UC system, UC replaces most other means-tested benefits and tax credits (called ‘legacy’ benefits) that you may have been getting.
•Many awards of legacy benefits have already been ended and replaced by UC.
•If you have not yet transferred to UC from legacy benefits, you can do so either by ‘natural migration’ (eg, by claiming UC after a change of circumstances) or by the DWP’s ‘managed migration’ to UC process.
•The DWP aims to start the managed migration to UC process for people with remaining awards of legacy benefits during 2025.
