Notice
To obtain a supply of electricity you must contact the supplier with your request. You can do this online, by completing the supplier’s standard application form or by writing a letter. However, most suppliers do not always require written notice and will connect your supply if you telephone to request a supply or if you call into a customer service centre. You may wish to safeguard your rights by making your request in writing or by following up your telephone request in writing. Keep a copy in case a dispute arises.
Most application forms contain all the necessary details. If you are writing a letter or email but are not sure what maximum power is required, it should be sufficient to make clear that you want an ordinary domestic supply. If you have a preference, also specify what type of meter you would like and how you wish to pay for your supply (see Chapter 4).
If you choose not to give information about yourself (eg, about your previous address or creditworthiness), you may be asked for a security deposit (see here). You do not have to give information about other people living in your home, but note that liability for the bill may be decided on who signs the application form or letter (see Chapter 5).
If your requirements on the application form are acceptable (ie, if the supplier is prepared to supply you on your choice of meter, method of payment or other terms and conditions), a contract supplier will offer you a contract that you can accept or reject.
