6. Other forms of support
Asylum support – If you (or someone you are a dependant of) are aged 18 or over, have an outstanding asylum
claim or appeal (or, in limited circumstances, if these have been refused) and are destitute, you may be able to get asylum support (accommodation and/or subsistence payments). Get advice for details (see
Box O.2 in Chapter 56).
Help from your local authority – You may be eligible for accommodation and/or other assistance from your local authority if you:
■are an unaccompanied child aged under 18 or you have a dependent child under the Children Act 1989 (in Scotland, the Children (Scotland) Act 1995); or
■have needs beyond destitution (eg due to your age or disability); contact the social care department (see
Chapter 38).
Remember that information is exchanged between local authorities and the Home Office. Get independent advice before you apply and if you are refused assistance.
