4. How is your claim decided?
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority’s staff will look at your application to check that the information you have given is correct. When you apply, you are asked to consent to the Authority contacting the police, your doctor, your employer or any other relevant person, to obtain confirmation of the incident, your injuries, loss of earnings, etc. They may ask you for other details. In some cases, you might be asked to undergo a medical assessment by a health professional chosen by the Authority.
The Authority’s staff will decide if you come within the scheme, and, if so, will assess the amount of compensation. You will be sent a written decision. You must complete and return an acceptance form within 56 days before any payment is made. If the award has been reduced or disallowed, you will be given reasons.
