•A young carer grant is a payment for young people aged 16 to 18 who care, or have been caring, for someone with a disability.

•You must live in Scotland, or live outside the UK and have a close link to Scotland, to qualify.

•You can add together hours caring for different people, but they must all be getting a disability benefit at the right level.

•You can only get a young carer grant once a year.

•Young carer grants are not means tested.

•You can qualify for a young carer grant whether you are in or out of work.

•You do not need to have paid national insurance contributions to qualify.

•Young carer grants are administered and paid by Social Security Scotland.

•If you disagree with a determination about a young carer grant, you can request a redetermination and then appeal against it (see Chapter 81). You must request a redetermination before you can appeal.
