•If you disagree with certain decisions made by the DWP, the local authority or HMRC, you can appeal to the First-tier Tribunal.

•For benefits other than housing benefit, you must usually apply for a mandatory reconsideration before you can appeal.

•There is a basic time limit of one month and also an absolute time limit for appealing.

•Appeals can take time. You may need to make a fresh claim for benefit or seek a supersession while you are waiting for your appeal to be heard.

•The tribunal can allow or reject your appeal, and replace the decision about which you appealed with any decision it thinks is right. This could be more or less favourable to you.

•If your appeal is unsuccessful, you may be able to appeal to the Upper Tribunal.
