1. Introduction
This chapter explains how to check your immigration status to establish your entitlement to social security benefits.
You can usually identify your immigration status in the UK from your biometric residence permit, your passport and any endorsements in it by the UK immigration authorities (eg, stamps, stickers or vignettes), from a grant of status letter from the Home Office, or through an online status checker.
Note: your status (or nationality) may have changed since your passport, endorsement or card was issued, or you may not hold any of these, including if the item has been lost or stolen.
