5. If you don’t agree with the decision
If you are unhappy with the decision, you can apply, in writing, for a review. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority must receive your request within 56 days of the date of the decision letter. The 56-day time limit can be extended if you can show there are exceptional circumstances that justify this; the request must be made in writing.
Your review application must be supported by reasons, together with any additional evidence. Reviews involve a full reconsideration of eligibility and the amount of the award, which could result in your award being increased, unchanged, reduced or withdrawn.
After the review, if you are still unhappy with the decision, you can appeal to a First-tier Tribunal (see
Chapter 59 ).
