Student support
If you are a full-time undergraduate student receiving a student loan for living costs, Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales or Student Finance NI normally stops your student support once you suspend your studies. However, they all have the discretion to continue making loan (or, in Wales, grant) payments for the rest of that academic year.
Your college or university should write to Student Finance England/Student Finance Wales/Student Finance NI explaining why it has suspended you from your course. You should also contact Student Finance England/Student Finance Wales/Student Finance NI in writing to request that it continue to pay you while you are taking time out. You are usually asked to provide medical evidence as well as evidence of potential hardship if applicable.
If you are an NHS-funded healthcare student in England or Wales, you can receive an NHS maternity bursary for up to 45 weeks while on maternity leave. Contact NHS Student Bursaries in England or the NHS Student Awards Services in Wales for details.
You could also apply to your college or university for support from its hardship funds.
If you receive a bursary from your college or university and want to take time out from your studies, check with the institution to see whether this continues to be paid during your time out and what happens when you return to your studies.
