10. Funeral support payment
A funeral support payment is made to help with burial or cremation costs.
Social Security Scotland is responsible for the administration of funeral support payments.
Who can get a funeral support payment
To qualify for a funeral support payment, you must get:1Reg 10 FEA(S) Regs
    universal credit (including if your award ended in the last month); or
    income support; or
    income-based jobseeker’s allowance; or
    income-related employment and support allowance; or
    child tax credit; or
    working tax credit including the disabled worker or severe disability element; or
    pension credit; or
    housing benefit.
You must have accepted responsbility for the funeral costs and it must be reasonable for you to have accepted responsbility.2Reg 7 FEA(S) Regs Usually, it will be reasonable for the person with the closest relationship to the person who has died to accept responsibility, but other factors, such as estrangement, may also be relevant. You must normally reside in Scotland and the person who has died must have normally resided in the UK. Usually, the funeral must take place in the UK, but a funeral in a European Economic Area state or Switzerland may sometimes qualify. You must claim within six months of the funeral.
